More than 30 fire engines battle major fire poly film storage facility, India
A fire that broke out at Jindal Poly Films' storage facility in Igatpuri's Mundhegaon village in India at 01h30am on Wednesday, 21 May 2025, was not completely suppressed by Thursday evening. As a safety measure, the Nashik district authorities have ordered evacuation within a 1km radius of the incident spot. Nine fire engines were on scene battling the fire without success. Authorities summoned 16 additional fire engines from various jurisdictions, including Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune and Thane districts on Wednesday night. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), which initially deployed three fire engines, sent four more to assist in controlling the situation.
NMC fire brigade personnel at the location reported that the fire continued to burn even after 45 hours, with containment efforts still in progress. The Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN)) unit of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived at the facility on Thursday afternoon to support the firefighting operation using water and foam.
Pradeep Borse, Fire Officer-in-Charge of Nashik Municipal Corporation, said that efforts are being made to control the temperature by continuously spraying water and foam on the LPG tank to prevent it from rising. If this tank catches fire, there is a possibility of a major explosion and a serious disaster.
It is understood that two workers were injured in the fire. As the fire continues to burn for the third day, strenuous efforts are being made to bring the fire under control.
The facility houses polypropylene chips as raw materials, which are highly combustible, complicating the firefighting efforts.
The fire started in a shed where scrap material was stored, said a local police official.
Jindal Poly Films stated in a stock exchange filing on Wednesday that production in a part of the plant was affected by the fire. The cause of the fire and the damage caused by it will be ascertained later, it added.
On 1 January 2023, a major fire incident had occurred at the same plant, claiming three lives.
