Table Mountain technical cliff training held, Cape Town
The Mountain Club South Africa Search and Rescue Team held a joint mountain rescue training session of the MCSA Cape Town and Hottentots Holland teams on Table Mountain on Saturday. 5 December 2020. The scenario had three patients with injuries of varying severity at two separate locations on the Arrow Final rock climbing route, which is situated directly below the Upper Table Mountain Cableway Station. With the kind assistance of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, rescuers were transported to the top of the mountain from where a short scramble brought them to above the simulated patients. A climber and a medic were sent to each patient and climbers were stationed on the cliff to manage rockfall. The critically injured patient was lowered in a stretcher to the bottom of the cliff, while the less severe and uninjured patients were hauled up to the top. Exercises such as this, simulating large complex scenarios, with multiple patients test the skills of all the rescuers involved and fulfil our mantra of "train hard, rescue easy".
