The heart of the search: Chazz – Learning to be "just a dog" again
|

There is something deeply moving about the retirement of a working dog. Unlike people, they have no understanding of careers, promotions or retirement plans. They don't count the years they have served or look ahead to a quieter life. They simply wake up each day ready to do the work they love, trusting that the person beside them will lead them wherever they are needed. For almost a decade, that was Chazz's life. Working alongside Warrant Officer Karl Gous of the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, Chazz became one of South Africa's most respected Search and Rescue dogs.
Together they responded to missing person investigations, mountain rescues, flood disasters and countless deployments that would never make newspaper headlines but would leave an unforgettable mark on the families involved.
Those who knew Chazz often described him as a dog with an old soul. His breeder, John Forsberg, recalled that even as a puppy he possessed a quiet confidence that set him apart. While the other dogs played, Chazz preferred to observe. He watched before he acted, learning about the world around him with a calm curiosity that would later become one of his greatest strengths as a Search and Rescue dog.
It was never simply about finding people. It was about doing the work with patience, discipline and absolute trust in the handler walking beside him.
Throughout his career, Chazz became part of many stories that families will never forget. Some searches ended in joyful reunions, while others required him to perform the far more difficult task of helping bring loved ones home. During the devastating KwaZulu-Natal floods in 2022, Chazz located the body of a nine-month-old baby buried beneath metres of mud. It was a heart-breaking discovery, yet one that gave a grieving family the certainty they had desperately been searching for.
Stories like these remind us that Search and Rescue is not measured only by the lives that are saved. Sometimes its greatest act of compassion is bringing an end to uncertainty, allowing families to begin the long journey of grieving with the dignity of knowing what happened to someone they love.
By the time Chazz retired in 2023, he had achieved an extraordinary success rate over nine years of service. Yet statistics tell us very little about a life like his. They cannot capture the countless hours spent training, the kilometres walked across mountains and riverbanks, the long nights away from home or the quiet understanding that develops between a handler and a dog who have learned to trust one another completely. That partnership is difficult to explain to anyone who has never witnessed it.
Handlers often say that, after years together, they no longer need commands for every situation. They begin to recognise the smallest changes in their dog's behaviour; a pause, a shift in posture, the way a dog works the air or returns to a particular area. In the same way, the dog learns to read the confidence and reassurance of the person holding the lead. It is a relationship built slowly over thousands of hours and it becomes the foundation upon which every successful search depends.
When Chazz retired, that rhythm of life inevitably changed. For Warrant Officer Karl Gous, retirement was undoubtedly a moment of pride, but it was also the closing of a chapter shared with a partner who had stood beside him through some of the most challenging moments of his career.
Fortunately, retirement did not mean separation.
Like many Search and Rescue dogs, Chazz remained exactly where he belonged, with the handler who had become his family. After years spent serving complete strangers, they are given the opportunity to enjoy the ordinary pleasures of life—a peaceful afternoon in the sun, time with the family they love and the comfort of growing older surrounded by the people who have always been there.
Chazz's story is a reminder that behind every successful Search and Rescue dog is a lifetime of dedication that most of us will never fully see. It is also a reminder that service does not diminish when the work comes to an end. The legacy of a remarkable dog lives on in every family he helped, every handler he inspired and every lesson he quietly taught about loyalty, trust and unwavering commitment.
