FIRE AID - Firefighters for Firefighters: Nine convoys. Four years. One mission.

74 firefighters from services across the UK took leave from their own watches to do something extraordinary. Over six days they drove 1 500 miles across five borders so the keys could pass from their hands into the hands of Ukrainian crews.
Because Ukrainian firefighters do the same job as their UK counterparts, except they do theirs under missile and drone attack. 480 fire stations destroyed or damaged. 106 in occupied territory. 1 780 pieces of equipment lost. "Being a firefighter, I know what use these are and I know how much they need them over there," said Michael Gumeniuk, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Convoy 9 volunteer driver.
They are first on the scene after every strike, and the cost to the people, the equipment, and the entire State Emergency Service of Ukraine is stark: 122 killed. 626 injured. 3 captured. 1 missing in action.
Seventeen appliances, three vans, a prime mover and 2 355 pieces of equipment. Engines that will replace ones destroyed in targeted attacks. Every vehicle in this convoy has been decommissioned and donated. Still fully operational, retired only because UK services replace their fleets on a schedule. A retired British engine still has years of service in it. FIRE AID exists to make sure those years are spent saving lives.
"These vehicles and equipment are lifelines, helping to save lives, protect firefighters and strengthen the resilience of communities under constant threat," said Oksana Romanukha, FIRE AID Humanitarian and Government Liaison.

FIRE AID was founded in 2012 in a café in Kent, where a group of like-minded experts, dedicated to supporting first responders globally, came together with a shared vision. Their goal was to create a central hub that would streamline the exchange of knowledge and resources to enhance emergency response efforts worldwide.
In early 2013, like-minded organizations gathered at the House of Commons for a meeting chaired by Jim Fitzpatrick, who was a serving MP at the time. During this meeting, funding was secured through the FCDO to establish FIRE AID's database and website. Jim served as Chair until September 2023.
FIRE AID’s first collaborative project was launched in Ukraine, followed closely by projects in Moldova and Tajikistan.
