Heart-breaking scenes as Yeoville Market catches fire after several threats to burn it down, Johannesburg
There was what appears to be an arson attack on the Yeoville Market in Johannesburg on Monday night, 20 June 2022. Witnesses said they saw a group of men carrying petrol bombs shortly before flames were seen coming from the market. On arrival at the fire-engulfed Yeoville Market, Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) worked rigorously to put out the blaze. They responded to the call of a fire shortly after midnight.
Nana Radebe-Kgiba, Johannesburg EMS spokesperson, said the fire did not cause extensive structural damage to the Yeoville Market. After fire fighters put out the blaze, a preliminary investigation indicated that only 23 of the more than 200 stalls caught fire. “Emergency services sent out two fire engines and a water tanker. The fire affected 23 shops, the cause of which could not be determined,” said Radebe-Kgiba. The witnesses were fearing for their lives on Tuesday and did not want to speak directly to journalists but they spoke to people from the community. Source: daily Maverick, News 24 |
