Firefighters take on The Leonardo Firefighter Stair Climb Challenge
|
|
On Saturday, 26 April 2025, a few firefighters from different fire departments partook in the Leonardo Stair Climb Challenge in Sandton, Johannesburg. The Leonardo is a 57-storey high-rise building and the tallest in Africa, consisting of 1 188 stairs.
The 11-member team consisted of:

Tertius Engelbrecht
Callie Vermeulen
Thabang Mokgatle
Nkosana Tshabalala
Lerato Mojaju
Itumeleng Xaba
All from Midvaal Fire Department
Vince Naude (West Rand)
Manie Gouws (West Rand EMS)
Nick Berry (Netcare 911)
The team were kitted with full fire gear, boots, flash hoods, gloves and SCBAs.
“On arrival at the venue, we were greeted by the friendliest staff. A picture of the team and staff was taken in front of the building. Then we proceeded to the fire stairs and started our climb”, said Tertius Engelbrecht of Midvaal Fire Department.
Manie Gouws finished his climb in 12 minutes.
“It was once again a challenging challenge but a great experience for all doing the extraordinary. After reaching the 57th floor, we had a small breakfast that was sponsored by the organisers at the ALTO234 Africa’s Highest Urban Bar. The whole team then proceeded down the 1 188 flights of stairs and met once again with the organising team that handed out certificates to each firefighter” added Engelbrecht.
“From our side, we just want to thank the staff of the Legacy Hotel especially Adrian Landry and Brandon Allen from Exigent Security Group.”
Big plans are in the process to make this challenge a Regional Competition.
