Fire breaks out at polystyrene warehouse in Benoni, Ekurhuleni
A fire broke at a polystyrene warehouse in Benoni, Ekurhuleni on Sunday, 20 February 2022. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “The call was received at around 21h27 for a warehouse that was well alight in London Road, Apex, Benoni. Benoni Central Fire Station crews responded with one major pumper augmented by six fire fighters; however, prior to arrival, back up from Brakpan and Tsakane fire stations was requested. Brakpan responded with a water tanker and major pumper manned by seven fire fighters while Tsakane fire crews responded with a major pumper manned by six fire fighters. Direct fire suppression was conducted to prevent fire spread to neighbouring structures within the factory. Scene was declared safe and done by 00h15 midnight.”
Ntladi added, “The warehouse had raw polystyrene and various other undisclosed materials and chemicals. The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
