Multiple shacks up in flames, one life lost, Ekurhuleni
An adult male in his early forties died after twelve shacks caught fire in Marathon Informal settlement, Germiston, City of Ekurhuleni. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison: Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “Firefighting teams from three fire stations, Primrose, Edenvale and Bedfordview, swiftly responded to the informal settlement immediately after the reception of the call at 00H36 early Friday morning, 1 August 2025. Primary responding crews from Primrose Fire Station were the first to arrive on scene, followed by Bedfordview and then Edenvale, respectively.”
“Seventeen firefighters formed one strong unit to battle the ranging flames. Two attack lines were used to bring flames under control before being knocked down completely”, said Ntladi.
He added, “Following information received on scene of an entrapment, search, rescue and recovery commenced and a charred body of an adult male was discovered under the burnt corrugated sheets.”
“Paramedics conducted declaration before the scene was handed over to enforcement agencies.”
The cause of the fire is undetermined and still remains a subject of investigations by both the police and fire safety officers.
