Fire stations of the world: Grand opening of Fire Station 13 in Cape Coral in Florida, US

The Cape Coral Fire Department hosted a grand opening ceremony of Fire Station 13, located at 2025 NE 6th Street on Wednesday, 17 July 2024. The programme included remarks from Mayor John Gunter, council member Tom Hayden and Acting Fire Chief Mike Russell. The station is 9 161 square feet and the construction site is 1,25 acres. “The addition of this station is necessary to match the increasing demands for service and growth of the city and to improve response times in this area that is rapidly developing with both commercial and residential projects and is a major thoroughfare in and out of Cape Coral,” said Acting Fire Chief Mike Russell.
The station houses a four-person fire engine that provides fire suppression and Advanced Life Support (ALS) services, a battalion chief and a brush truck which will be cross-staffed.
Dave Rayborn, division chief of Logistics, says they focused on the safety of their firefighters as one of their main priorities with Station 13. Station 13 has the following new safety features:
"We've really put a lot of thought and energy into making it better with the health and safety of the firefighters along with being able to get out faster," said Rayborn.
Acting Fire Chief Russell says this new station will service nearly 30 000 people and is expected to average around 3 200 calls per year. That's more than 11 percent of their current total call volume.
"What I've noticed is obviously continues to grow at three or four or 5 000 people a year," said Tom Hayden, City Council District 3. "I think what's also significant is that in my three and a half years here, we built three fire stations, which is incredibly significant for those areas of the city."
Acting Fire Chief Russell said the department has plans to open another station in the future, as well as a police and fire-shared training facility.
Fire Station 13 incorporates areas currently covered by Fire Stations 2 and 5, the city’s two busiest stations, fire officials said.
Station 13 cost approximately $7,4 million, funded by Debt Proceeds secured by the Fire Service Assessment.
Cape Coral is located on the southwest coast of Florida. It is the largest city between Tampa and Miami and the eight largest by population in the state. Cape Coral has over 400 miles of canals, more than any other city in the world. The Cape Coral Fire Department is an Internationally Accredited, ISO Class 3 agency that provides service to the 222 000 residents of Cape Coral and coverage to the City’s 120-sq miles in addition to 20-sq miles of unincorporated Lee County that includes Burnt Store Marina.

- New bay garage doors that open up in 6 seconds for their trucks
- A 'hot, warm, cool' pressure system that gets rid of contaminants before people enter the living areas
- A window into the gym in case someone gets hurt, people can see in to help them
- Gear cleaning equipment that will help prevent cancer
