Meet Kishugu Aviation’s youngest bomber pilot

​Meet Riaan Rautenbach, the youngest Bomber AT-802 pilot at Kishugu Aviation. With 19 years of service, his journey began in 2005 when he joined as a Spotter Observer. His fast learning skills quickly earned him the role of flying solo. For 17 years, he piloted the command and control spotter plane and in 2022, after an intensive two-week training in Spain, he transitioned to the mighty Bomber AT-802.
 
"I am passionate about flying and firefighting. This is definitely the ideal job for me; even after so many years, I still get goosebumps," says Rautenbach.
 
“This winter fire season marks his fourth season flying the Bomber and he is currently deployed to Mpumalanga, where some of our aerial resources are contracted to assist various partners in suppressing veld and forest fires this winter.
Rautenbach is one of over 40 Kishugu Aviation pilots on standby in various provinces for the 2024 winter fire season.”
