Fire at Sappi Saiccor Mill in Umkumaas after tanker explosion, KwaZulu-Natal
A fire and subsequent explosion occurred on a supplier truck delivering liquid oxygen (used for bleaching) to the Sappi Saiccor Mill in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 17 July 2024. Sappi’s statement reads, “The onsite firefighting team of the Saiccor Mill responded immediately to the ensuing fire, assisted shortly thereafter by Durban Metro Fire and Emergency services.”
“The fire was rapidly brought under control and ultimately extinguished. All personnel and onsite contractors were evacuated to safety and there have been no injuries.”
“Sappi Southern Africa would like to assure the members of the surrounding community that the fire has been extinguished and that there is no danger with regards to any fumes from the liquid oxygen content.”
“We express our sincere gratitude to the members of the Metro Services and to the quick reactions of our in-house teams for containing the fire rapidly and safely.
On Friday, 19 July 2024, Sappi reported, “The mopping up and assessment operation has been completed. The damage is limited to the vaporisers (used to turn liquid oxygen into gas usable by the plant) and some peripheral equipment. Replacement equipment is on site and being installed. Work should be completed by Sunday, 21 July 2024, with phased start-up then reliant on receiving the prerequisite Department of Labour approval.”
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our suppliers and customers for their understanding during this short interruption. The impact of the event is not material within the quarter.”
