Massive fire engulfs Fuyao Glass America plant in Ohio as firefighters battle blaze, US

On Sunday, 22 March 2026, a major fire broke out at the Fuyao Glass America plant in Moraine, Ohio, one of the world's largest automotive glass manufacturing facilities. Emergency crews were dispatched around 20h30 to the 2800 block of Stroop Road after reports of a structure fire, according to Moraine dispatchers. Multiple fire departments responded to the incident, which burned for several hours and was fuelled by roofing materials.
Crews were still on scene the morning of March 23, continuing to pour water onto the roof of the facility as smoke and small flames remained visible, according to the Dayton Daily News.
Seven fire departments used more than 20 million gallons of water to battle the flames. Firefighters from Moraine led the response but they were not alone. Crews from neighboring Kettering and Washington Township rushed to assist, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. AES Ohio, the local utility, cut electricity to the facility and dispatched its own teams to the scene. The fire and smoke, driven by the relentless winds, were pushed toward Springboro Pike, raising questions about air quality in the area.
The US EPA conducted monitoring for two days following the incident and reported no harmful levels of pollutants in the air.
Operational challenges: High winds (gusting up to 45 mph) and lightning storms hampered efforts, forcing firefighters to briefly pause and making it difficult to reach the 700,000-square-foot roof with water.The fire burned for approximately 56 hours before being fully extinguished.
All employees were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported among workers or first responders.
The facility is located at 2801 West Stroop Road, Moraine, occupying a former General Motors assembly plant.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, officials initially determined the fire began on the roof and was primarily fuelled by roofing materials.
Operational status
Manufacturing resumed shortly after the fire in portions of the complex that were unaffected. Major partners like General Motors and Stellantis stated they did not expect immediate disruptions to their supply chains.
As of late March 2026, a structural engineer must deem the roof safe before fire investigators can complete their final assessment of the damage.
