Women in EMS and Fire Services Leadership Conference 2022 held in Cape Town
The Women in EMS and Fire Services Leadership Conference 2022 was held in Cape Town on 5 and 6 May 2022 at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel. The Conference themed ‘Committed to change’ aimed to provide a proactive network that supports, mentors and educates current and future women in the fire and emergency medical services. The event was dedicated to improving the EMS and fire service through the involvement and success of women and provided a networking and communication platform for EMS and fire servicewomen, enabling them to gain resources and discuss the issues faced.
The conference was organised by Eminence Corporate Solutions. Fire and Rescue International was the official media partner. A number of suppliers exhibited including SkillsTrain Distribution, Darley, Charnaud, Dräger, MediCare, YMS Medical Supplies, ETS Training Solutions, Dosetech and Medhold. A number of remarkable women presented at the event, sharing their journeys, stories and experiences but most of all the tools to manage the adversities faced by women on a daily basis. The main focus being on being a leader that not only enables women but men as well in order for all to achieve and grow in a healthy and equal environment. The messages were strong and inspiring and came from experience. Presentations included Dr Robyn Holgate, chief medical officer at ER24, who discussed ‘How to achieve and sustain long-term success at work and home’, where she shared her five pillars of success ie be good, get excited, work hard, accept failure, read to lead, keep the faith and GRIT. Working on Fire’s Melany Duthie-Surtie, general manager for the Western Cape, shared ‘The future: the environment, technology and society’. Phoenix Bean, a senior search and rescue (SAR) flight paramedic working in the United Arab Emirates, discussed the differences between coaching and mentoring and the skills and abilities needed for each. Christalene De Kella, video unit manager at Working on Fire, shared her inspiring journey in becoming a fire fighter and how she worked her way up to her current position. Charlotte Pillay, performance manager at Netcare Emergency Operations Centre, discussed ‘Leadership from the bottom up’. Authenticity coach Thato Belang, shared her experience and journey saying, “Over the years, I have made it my mission to unearth my authenticity and to use it as my anchor and tool to develop individuals and leaders and make an impact in their lives and businesses.” Dr Carol-Ann Benn, specialist surgeon and head of Netcare Breast Care Centre at Helen Joseph Hospital’s presentation was themed ‘You’re braver than you believe; stronger than you seem and smarter than you think - From 1-10 with Winnie the Pooh’. Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) crew leader and divisional/group supervisor, Kylie Paul, presented on empowering teams. Claire Lotter, CEO at Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), shared an overview of Volunteer Wildfire Services and discussed leadership skills and attributes while the National Sea Rescue Institute’s Jill Fortuin-Abrahams, executive director for drowning prevention services, shared views on ‘Intoxicated leadership: thinking strategically vs reacting emotionally. Monique Venter, senior lecturer at Netcare FECC’s presentation included ‘Gender pay gap and some other important stuff’ sharing the current constraints women face, sharing how tools to positively change and impact your home and work environment.
