A fire broke out at an electrical substation in Springs in Ekurhuleni on Friday evening, 20 May 2022. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said, “A fire was reported at the Electricity and Energy Department in First Avenue, Springs at about 15h30. Springs Fire Station was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival it was found that a building was on fire. Next to the building were a council minibus and two transformers burning as well. Glass from the windows of the main entrance was lying in the street. The street was closed off from Second Street to Seventh Street in order to stage the fire engines and to keep bystanders out of the danger area.”

“Response included Springs Fire Station with a heavy pumper and six crew, Selection Park Fire Station with a heavy pumper and six crew, Etwatwa Fire Station with a heavy pumper and five crew, Station Manager BM Willemse with a utility vehicle, several Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers and members of the Springs Community Policing Forum (CPF)”, said Ntladi..

“After receiving confirmation that there is no electricity supply to the area, the crews started to extinguish the building fire and burning council minibus. Forcible entry was used to gain access to the building and three doors were forced open. The roof of the building started to collapse and the fire fighting teams were repositioned to the outside of the building to carry on with extinguishing the fire and doing damping down. At this time there were only small flames at the top of the transformers that later on extinguished itself.”

He added, “A fire engine was stationed close to the fire and was busy extinguishing the fire. Selection Park Fire Station and Etwatwa Fire Station were called for backup and was used to relay water from the hydrant in First Avenue to the fire engine of Springs Fire Station who was busy extinguishing the fire. Two more attack lines were added to the fire engine to assist in extinguishing the fire. The fire was extinguished and damping down was done.”

The call was received at about 15h30 and the last vehicle that was back at base was 18h00.

There were no injuries reported. There was extensive damage to the building with the roof that collapsed as well. One Council minibus vehicle was completely burned out with a second council minibus with minor damage caused by the fire. Cables and wiring all over could be seen melted and transformer oil was running down the transformers and into the bund areas. A couple of windows from the main entrance was blown out from the blast and was lying in the street.
