Three rescued after rockslide inside stone quarry traps six workers in Tirunelveli, India
Three workers were rescued while three others remained trapped after a rockslide was suddenly triggered where work was being carried out late Saturday night, 14 May 2022, at a private stone quarry in Tirunelveli district in India. The workers have been trapped inside the around 300ft deep stone quarry at Adaimithippankulam near Munnirpallam in Tirunelveli district. At nearly midnight on Saturday, a boulder reportedly got displaced suddenly and rolled down into the stone quarry triggering a rockslide near where workers were deployed, along with three cranes and three trucks. The rocks slide trapped six workers beneath the debris.
Tirunelveli district collector V Vishnu, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Tirunelveli range, Pravesh Kumar and Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police (SP), P Saravanan, also inspected the rescue operations carried out at the stone quarry. By Sunday evening, one more worker, Selvam, was rescued. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team consisting of 30 personnel from 4th Battalion, Arakkonam were also rushed to Adaimithippankulam for rescue operations. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the injured workers from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund. The CM also said that Minister for Backward Classes Welfare RS Raja Kannappan and Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management will go to the spot in person to supervise the rescue operations. A road roko protest was meanwhile staged by the relatives of the workers and local residents condemning the slow pace of the rescue operations and demanding to arrest the owner of the stone quarry.
