Partial structural collapse in Margate area leaves one criticalA partial structural collapse of a parking structure roof in Margate on the South Coast in KwaZulu-Natal on 23 November 2020, critically injured one person. Pravesh Ramchander, station officer at the Ray Nkonyeni Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Service said, “We responded to a partial structural roof covering collapse onto a light delivery vehicle (ldv) with one entrapment under rubble on Monday afternoon at 14h15 in the Manaba suburb near Margate. Fire services were immediately despatched. Seaslopes Fire Station with two first responders mobilised with a rescue unit and was on scene at 14h21. Ray Nkonyeni Law Enforcement, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service, Med Evac and SAPS were in attendance. On arrival it was observed that a man was trapped under the rubble from the collapsed structure. The trapped person was extricated using rescue equipment to remove him from underneath the rubble. Paramedics assessed the patient who had sustained critical injuries, administered on scene care, stabilised and then transported the patient to Margate Hospital for further treatment. The call was completed at 15h45. Challenges faced included working under a unstable building to perform the operation.
