Sandstorm engulfs parts of Upington
Enormous storm clouds and dust swept across the Northern Cape town of Upington on Saturday, 21 November 2020. Dust storms usually appear before it starts raining in the drought-stricken province. The sandstorm, caused by strong winds, swept through the area and it looked like a scene out of a Hollywood movie production. Several residents whipped out their cameras to capture the moment. South African Weather Service forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said, “Thunderstorms developed in the south of Upington and the strong winds that were ahead of the storm collected dust and debris as the storm moved over the town. This type of storm is seen around semi-desert areas when there are thunderstorms, like in the Northern Cape.” The storm lasted for two hours. Although sandstorms may be unfamiliar to many South Africans, locals in Upington have become accustomed to them. “It has happened before. It even happened a few times last year as well,” Elizha van Amalia said. She has been living in Upington for two years. “When we see this type of sandstorm, then we know the rain is on its way,” she added. And, just like Van Amalia predicted, a thunderstorm and downpours soon followed.
