New City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service structure will streamline operations
|

Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is the largest in South Africa and plays a critical role in assisting residents and communities during fires and emergency situations. The new structure, under the command of the Chief Fire Officer (CFO), will allow for streamlined and effective decision-making. The previous structure saw all staff reporting directly to the CFO, including support sections such as the uniform and medical stores, technical services and the planning and logistics section. With the new structure, two Deputy Chief Fire Officers have been appointed; they are Wayne Okkers and Craig Cyster.
Staff who formerly held the title of ‘Head’ in the service are now Assistant Chief Fire Officers (ACFO).
Planning, Logistics and Technical Services have been grouped into a single section, with its own ACFO.
’Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is a source of pride in our city, and we are constantly looking at new ways to further increase efficiencies and improved service delivery. This new structure is designed to help the service move into the future and stay on par with the latest developments in the emergency response environment. I want to wish the team well, but also remind them that the task ahead is daunting. Forward planning, resourcing and skills development are critical to dealing with the ever-changing urban environment and the growing risks that come with it,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
