Medics, patient and pedestrian injured when truck hits ambulance, Pietermaritzburg

A runway truck collided with a pedestrian and ambulance at the Chota Motala offramp in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, leaving multiple injured. Two medics and a patient in transit were injured in the incident when the truck hit their ambulance just before 11am. CFO Essack Khan, chief fire officer, Msunduzi Fire and Rescue, said, “The braking system of 1 x heavy duty vehicle failed whilst coming down the N3 North Bound near the vicinity of the Peter Brown off ramp. The vehicle proceeded further down to the Chota Motala Off ramp where the driver attempted to bring the same to a stop by driving up a verge/bank. In trying this, the vehicle collided with an ambulance that was at the intersection.”
CFO Khan said their response included one Major Rescue Appliance equipped with rescue and extrication tools and one officer and four crew from Oribi Fire Station. Firefighters made vehicle safe, assisted by private ambulance service with the patient (bystander). There were no entrapments. Rescue 1 was mobile out at 11h06 and in attendance at 11h16.
There was no injury to the driver of the HMV but a pedestrian was Code Blue and a by stander Code Green.
Midlands EMS operations director and medic Roland Robertson confirmed that two paramedics and their patient were injured in the accident and were treated on scene. He wished the paramedics a quick recovery. Robertson said, “We all know each other because we see each other when we are working on the scene. It’s not good when those who work in the field are injured. We work in such an environment where we do not wish each other harm. We wish them well in their recovery.”
Shalen Ramduth, operations director of Netcare 911, confirmed that one of its ambulances was involved in the accident. “While we are relieved that the patient being transported and our staff sustained only mild injuries, we are deeply shocked and saddened that a pedestrian was seriously injured in the accident,” said Ramduth.
