Firefighters use drone to track heat, tackle giant Carlisle apartment fire; firefighter injured, US

On Saturday, February 22, 2025, at approximately 20h30, the Carlisle Fire Department, along with the Carlisle Barracks Fire Department, was dispatched to 1 Veterans Way in Carlisle Borough for a report of smoke in an apartment building. Shortly after dispatch, the 911 Centre received additional reports of smoke and upgraded the assignment to bring additional resources. First arriving units found a heavy smoke condition in the adjoining streets and parking area. Hose lines were advanced to the third floor to find the fire in the attic with a common open area.
Firefighters, along with the Carlisle Borough Police Department, assisted with the evacuation of residents. Some residents needed assistance and some needed to be carried out to safety. Three residents were treated by Cumberland Goodwill EMS and transported to UPMC Carlisle for evaluation, where they were later released. With the extensive evacuation of residences required, an additional alarm of fire apparatus and personnel was requested to assist. With the fire in the attic rapidly spreading and breaking through the roof, personnel were evacuated and four ladder trucks were placed into operation to extinguish the fire.
It took over two hours to bring the fire under control so that fire department personnel could go back into the building to extinguish the remaining fire. One firefighter was injured from falling debris and was transported to UPMC for evaluation and later released. Fire Department personnel operated on the scene till 03h30am Sunday morning.
With over 40 residents evacuated, the Cumberland County Department of Public Safety arranged for a bus to transport them to Carlisle Fire and Rescue Social Hall, where the Red Cross could assist. The Red Cross then established a shelter for those who did not have housing available for the night.
Drone
The North Middleton Fire Company took to Facebook to share how crews were able to use a drone to find and extinguish the flames. The drone is able to detect heat and differences in temperatures while 200-350 feet up in the air, the fire company said, helping firefighters identify "red hot" areas that may still have fire.
The Carlisle Borough Police Department and the State Police Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
The Carlisle Fire Department would like to thank many of the businesses that provided food and drinks to the members of the emergency services. This act of kindness not only benefitted the first responders but many of the residents as well.
