Wilderness Search and Rescue teams’ exercise changes to rescue and recovery on Devils Peak, Cape Town
The Wilderness Search and Rescue teams’ exercise together with Air Mercy Service (AMS) on Saturday, 22 January 2022 in Cape Town, changed to a recovery. “Our early morning exercise in collaboration with the emergency helicopter operated by AMS under contract from the Department of Health, changed to a rescue high up on Devil's Peak in Cape Town. WSAR had a number of resources on scene,” said Johann Marais of WSAR. ““A 30-year-old trail runner had collapsed on the contour path below Devils Peak. WSAR who was busy with an exercise, was alerted to this incident by another trail runner who ran around to call for assistance.”
“A technical rescuer and two paramedics had been shorthauled by the helicopter as part of the exercise. They were immediately flown to the collapsed runner. Someone was already doing CPR. This was not successful and the patient was declared dead on arrival. The runner may have had a heart attack. The results of a post mortem should, however, be awaited. The body of the deceased was extracted with the helicopter contracted to the Department of Health and handed to the Forensics Department of the SAPS. Thereafter, our rescue group and their training partners had a debrief. We mourn the loss of this young man.” Source: Wilderness Search and Rescue |
