Recycling plant fire in Cape Town’s Philippi
A fire broke out at a recycling plant in Philippi in Cape Town on Sunday, 24 January 2021. City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service responded to the factory fire with motor pumps from Landsdowne Road, Simon’ s Town, Constantia, Sea Point, Kommetjie Road, Melkbos and Brooklyn fire stations, motor pumps and water tankers from Gugulethu, Lakeside and Mitchell’s Plain fire stations; an aerial appliance and motor pump from Goodwood Fire Station, water tankers from Wynberg, Atlantis and Mfuleni fire stations; a motor pump and skid unit from Kuilsriver Fire Station; seasonal fire fighters from Belhar, a rescue vehicle from Ottery with approximately 90 staff members on scene during the operation. “The entire structure and contents were destroyed including eight vehicles. Crews experienced intense heat as a result of the fireload, strong winds and bad housekeeping. The fire was extinguished on Monday, 25 of January 2021 at approximately 18h30. The area was monitored over a period for flare ups. A fire prevention officer and a building inspector were requested to the scene as well”, said Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service.
