Cape Town crews respond to paint factory fire in Montague Gardens

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue crews responded to a large fire at the Duram Paint factory in Montague Gardens on Sunday, 17 November 2024. According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, several crews were called out in the early hours of Sunday morning, including “11 fire engines, six water tankers and an aerial appliance”. According to social media comments, multiple explosions could be heard coming from Duram Paints factory in Alternator Way since early in the morning. Carelse said, “The incident was reported on at approximately 03h30. This was in essence a chemical fire. The fire area was divided into three divisions; this assisted with exposure protection and limiting the fire damages.”
“The incident stabilised around 17h30 when we scaled down on the number of resources required on scene. After 21h00 the last vehicles left the scene we had crews inspect the area periodically over the next 24 hours. This was mostly for some smouldering pieces that caused a bit of smoke,” said Carelse. Overall, 27 fire engines responded to this fire, including 12 water tenders, a rescue unit, an aerial platform, two command units, a medical unit, two specialised units, a hazmat unit and a skid unit. He added, “One firefighter sustained superficial burn marks through his tunic as a result of the intense heat that was given off by the chemicals involved. Challenges faced included that the water supply in the area was a challenge as pressure had to be augmented and crews relied on relay pumping.”
