ETS hosts Industrial Emergency Response Competition 2024 at its training centre in Redan

Emergency Training Solutions (ETS) hosted its Industrial Emergency Response Competition 2024 at its training centre in Redan on 31 October 2024. 13 teams competed this year, which included Sappi Ngodwana, Sappi Saiccor Spartans, Sappi Stanger “Fired Up”, Sappi Tugela, Team Charnaud, the Bulls, SA Mint, Miner League, Team Kusile, Matimba Fire Ops Team, Matimba Maintenance Team, Matimba FRM Fire Team and Ndlela SR.
11 judges ensured that all participants adhered to the rules and ensured all went as planned. The judges were Shadrack Mudzuli, Anthony Bruno, Callie Vermeulen, Johannes Moreba, Erna Redinger, Chris Aucamp, Tshepo Mpeake, Heinrich Brown, Cyril Berman and Daniel Pieterse.
The 2024 Industrial Emergency Response Competition consisted of three scenarios testing the skills of the teams. Each scenario offered its own challenge, creating a solution-driven task, promoting leadership skills alongside technical and incident management skills.

The Main Event1. Six team members shall participate in this event. The event shall involve at least one fire. This event will test the ability of a small team of six (including the team leader) to use their resourcefulness to resolve an incident.
2. Mini scenarios may be injected into the main event to test the team’s incident management skills.
3. At least two judges will judge this event
4. ETS shall provide at least the following fire-fighting equipment to all teams.
a. 3x 65mm lay flat hose
b. 3x 45 mm lay flat hose
c. 3 x 38 mm lay flat hose
d. 1 x dividing breaching
e. 3 x Adjustable nozzles (branches)
5. ETS reserves the right to make additional items of equipment available, in order to give teams “options” and/or additional challenges.
6. The team scoring the highest points according to the Judge sheet criteria will be the winner.
7. All team members shall always wear their full PPE while participating. SCBA is not required for this event.
8. Full PPE shall mean approved bunker jacket, bunker pants, fire-fighting boots, fire-fighting gloves, balaclava and helmet.
9. PPE shall be inspected by the judges before any team is allowed to participate.
Skills EventFire PPE donning and hose laying event
1. All participants must participate in this event.
2. Each one of the participants must don their full PPE within one minute to avoid penalties.
3. Full PPE shall mean bunker jacket, bunker pants, fire-fighting boots, fire-fighting gloves, balaclava and helmet.
4. The team shall be required to couple up their hoses to hydrants, run out hoses, divide and collect hose lines, charge hose lines, replace possible burst length of hose and hit a target with their hose streams.
5. Teams may be required to advance their hose-lines up and down stairways.
6. Points will be deducted for failure to perform important tasks such as not flushing hydrants, failing to check hose seals or misuse of equipment.
7. The team completing the event in the fastest time with the least penalties will win.
SCBA, obstacle course and fire extinguisher event1. Two of the five team members will be selected by the team captain to don and doff their SCBA sets in the proper manner.
2. The SCBA sets will be pre-assembled. Donning shall include at least three checks namely face-mask seal check, low pressure alarm check and high pressure test.
3. The two team members wearing SCBA will be judged on their method.
4. Once the two team members have fully donned their SCBA, they must move through an obstacle course.
5. Once they exit the obstacle course, the rest of the team may also move through the obstacle course carrying two portable fire extinguishers.
6. Once the whole team has exited the obstacle course two fire team members must advance towards the fire pan in order to extinguish the fire using the best techniques possible.
7. The two fire fighters using the portable extinguishers will be judged on their method.
8. The whole event will be timed.
The next ETS Industrial Challenge will take place in in September 2025.
