Team South Africa shines at Portugal fire fighter games
After an eventful and satisfying tour to the 14th World Fire Fighter Games recently held in Lisbon Portugal, our South African Fire Fighting team can stand proud, having achieved great success with a massive haul of medals. Team South Africa comprised of 22 males and six females. 19 males were from Cape Town, two from Nelson Mandela Bay and one from Garden Route District Municipality and the six females were from Cape Town.
The World Fire Fighter Games is an inclusive event that is held biennially in different countries across the globe, the first one being Auckland New Zealand in 1990, Durban South Africa in 1998 and Paris France in 2000. This year, the World Fire Fighter Games was held over a period that commemorates with International Fire Fighters Day on 4 May 2022. The time period coincided with our change of season (down time) here in South Africa, as well as, prior to the Portuguese greater operational commitment, most especially towards rural fire fighting.
The World Fire Fighter Games normally draws participants from at least 50 countries from across the world, many of whom compete in at least 40 different sporting codes and is commonly referred to, as the ‘Fire Fighter Olympics’. In addition, the prestigious Toughest Fire Fighter Alive competition was held, being the highlight of the Games, with some of our own, competing in the male and female categories, three in total. Emile Conrad obtained a Silver medal for his age category, as well as an overall tenth place finish, with a time of 7 minutes 59 seconds. Alno Kroon finished in a time of about 9 minutes and Baguim Abrahams finished hers in a time of 14 minutes.
Athletes were allowed to compete within their respective age groups, which allowed for greater participation and due reward at all levels.
A total of 47 medals were bagged, which included 36 for individual events and11 for the team events. The medals comprised 10 Gold, 18 Silver and eight Bronze, in the individual category, as well as, four Gold, four Silver and three Bronze in the team category.
The South African Team management and organisational structure, together with the Western Cape Fire Fighters Association would like to express their sincere gratitude to the organising committee, president of the World Fire Fighter Games and Lisbon Portugal, for being a tremendous host and last but not least, to all the participants for ensuring that the World Fire Fighter Games was a pleasant, rich and rewarding experience.
