A new fire station opens in the heart of Johannesburg
|

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, has officially opened the newly constructed Central Fire Station in the Johannesburg CBD. He was joined by MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Eunice Mgcina, Acting HOD for Public Safety, Mr Andries Mucavele and Acting Chief of EMS, Clement Masinge. Delivered by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City of Joburg EMS, this state-of-the-art facility marks a major milestone in improving emergency response, service delivery and safety in the Inner City.
The new facility will provide:
The new Central Fire Station replaces one of Johannesburg’s oldest emergency hubs, continuing a proud legacy of service. The old Central Fire Station, built in the early 1900s and now a proclaimed heritage site, served the inner City community diligently for decades.
The new Fire Station is designed to enhance operational efficiency and ensure quicker, more effective responses to emergencies across the Inner City. It also houses the City’s 11th BESAFE Centre, where the Public Information, Education and Relations (PIER) team will run vital fire prevention and life safety programmes for residents.
A platoon of 50 highly trained firefighters has been deployed to the station; equipped to respond to fires, hazardous materials incidents, building collapses, and water rescues.
This flagship EMS project reflects the City’s strategic commitment to building safer communities, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that every resident has access to world-class emergency services. The City urges residents of the CBD and surrounding areas to take pride in and safeguard this important facility; a symbol of Johannesburg’s resilience, readiness and commitment to a safer future.
