From student to a successful business owner: exceptional alumni, Michelle Smith, Meditech EMS
We are honoured to highlight one of our exceptional alumni, Michelle Smith, as part of our Women’s Month Celebration. Michelle’s journey from student to a successful business owner of @meditech_er Meditech Emergency Medical Services in Durban’s Upper Highway area is a powerful testament to what women can achieve in the emergency medical field. In a male-dominated industry, Michelle has not only risen to the challenge but has excelled beyond expectations. She completed both her Bachelors and Masters Degree in Health Science in Emergency Medical Care and Rescue, while simultaneously building her business from the ground up. What started as one ambulance and two staff members has now flourished into a fleet of six ambulances, four response vehicles and a team of 48 dedicated staff members.
This year Meditech was proudly recognised as the Best Emergency Response Service in Durban.
Michelle’s story is an inspiration to woman everywhere, showing that with passion, determination and unwavering commitment no dream is too big. She embodies the spirit of resilience and empowerment, proving that women can thrive and lead in any field. “Working and owning my own business is living the ultimate dream. Each time one of my vehicles leaves the base, I know it’s making a difference in our community and that feeling is indescribable,” Michelle shares.
Meditech also took part in the 2023 DUT Faculty of Health Sciences Entrepreneurship Day, further showcasing Michelle’s dedication to empowering others and contributing to the growth of the healthcare industry.
Her journey is a beacon of hope and encouragement for all women in the emergency medical services. “Find something you love and stick with it,” Michelle advises.
“Remember the impact you make on someone’s worst day. Your passion can change lives.”
