Fire stations of the world: Spring Fire Station No 74, Texas, US

As part of a successful initiative to improve the Harris County ESD No 7’s ISO rating from a 3 to a 2, the new Spring Fire Station No 74 was built to provide better response coverage to the area in which it serves. Located on the same site as the existing Station No 74, the new facility includes much-needed living accommodations for this growing combination department. To provide some consistency to volunteers who may work at multiple stations within the district, this new station is a site adaptation of the recently completed Spring Fire Station No 75. SFD Chief Scott Seifert said the new station is a replacement facility, as the original Station No 74 did not include sleeping quarters. “The stations that we built back in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and even the early 2000s, they were never meant to house firefighters 24/7, so we needed to build state-of-the-art fire stations that would be able to do that,” Chief Seifert said. “[The new station] can also withstand 150mph winds, which is pretty critical during a hurricane.”
The new 16 553-square-foot station is located on Aldine Westfield Road at the corner of Old Aldine Westfield, next to the original station, which the department plans to use for storage.
At a cost of about $7,4 million, Schmanski said the new facility is an investment intended to last for decades.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Robert Logan, the new facility was built to be energy efficient and includes a large living room and kitchen, as well as more apparatus bay space that can accommodate added apparatus in the future. In addition to 11 dorm rooms, the station has a training area that can also be used as a community meeting room.
The Spring Fire Department is located in Spring, Texas, approximately 25 miles north of downtown Houston. Founded in 1953, Spring Fire is one of the largest combination fire departments in the state of Texas serving 156,000 residents across 62 square miles of unincorporated Harris County. Operating out of nine stations, with a fleet of 46 apparatus, Fire Chief Scott Seifert leads the combination department of 184 personnel comprised of volunteer, part-time and full-time personnel who provide the best service for our community.
Representing the past, present and future of the fire service, this state-of-the-art station incorporates traditional architectural elements from historic fire stations with high performing materials and a more modern building form to establish a sort of Back to the Future design style. Utilising a mixture of traditional materials, such as brick and stone masonry, with iconic red four-fold doors and arched openings as a nod back to fire stations of the past. Metal panel accents add a touch of modern technology while sweeping shed roofs and clerestory windows add a contemporary vivacity to the design.
On the interior, exposed timber and steel rod trusses and wood-looking acoustical decking add character and warmth to spaces while improving the ability to hear the call information from the alerting system. North-facing clerestory windows fill the station with natural daylight without increasing the heat load on this Houston-area facility. LED uplighting along the interior of the bay adds light to the façade at night, which creates a beacon of public safety for the community.
