A Kentucky bill would significantly expand the list of cancers recognized as occupational and line-of-duty for paid and volunteer firefighters, making firefighters who died of those cancers eligible for death benefits. House Bill 34, sponsored by Rep. Kim Banta (R–Fort Mitchell), would add nine additional cancers to those considered to be workplace related: mesothelioma, oesophageal, lung, rectal, thyroid, intestinal, multiple myeloma, buccal and pharyngeal cancers.
Deaths from these diseases would be considered line-of-duty deaths, the Cadiz Record reports. Current Kentucky law already provides benefits for firefighters who die of bladder, brain, colon, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, kidney, liver, lymphatic or hematopoietic, prostate, testicular, skin, cervical and breast cancers. Since 2002, more Kentucky firefighters have died from occupational cancer than from fires, cardiac events or other on-scene incidents combined, according to testimony from firefighter representatives.
