Insane feat for a great cause! Firefighting duo raises R200k for VWS during Two Oceans Marathon
“Two City of Cape Town firefighters, Jermaine and Renaldo, took on the Totalsports Two Oceans half marathon in full firefighting gear, including thick bunker gear clothing, helmets and breathing apparatus oxygen tanks! Their mission? To raise awareness and donations for the incredible Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), a community organisation that provides vital support to SANParks and the Table Mountain National Park during wildfires”, said Alderman JP Smith, City of Cape Town.
These unsung volunteer heroes are trained in wildland firefighting and always answer the call when disaster strikes. But they need our help to keep doing what they do best!
VWS is in desperate need of a new vehicle to transport volunteers to the mountain during fires, after their old ones broke down. That's where you come in! Cape Town's Jermaine and Renaldo are asking for your support - just R21 per person can make a huge difference.

Since 2017, two veteran firefighters Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan have been participating in the half marathon, in full firefighting attire. This year they have added an extra spin, by including their self-containing breathing apparatus adds an extra 10 kilograms of weight.
What made the feat even more challenging is the fact that the pair crossed over the 21.1 km finish line, whilst the Mother City was in midst of a heatwave.
“This year was an extremely daunting experience, especially with the heat that we had encountered but we achieved our mission of completing the half-marathon and now it is up to the public to come to the party and to donate to an extremely worthy cause,” said Carelse, who has been tackling fires for the past 27 years.
All in the name of charity, the iconic duo has raised around R350 000 since 2023 to aid the work of VWS. Carelse explains how the money will be put to good use by the organisation.
“The money will be used for operational costs as well as acquiring a new vehicle, a much-needed vehicle for them to ferry their staff around to the various incidents,” Carelse elaborated.
