Ekurhuleni: Vehicle and petrol tanker collides, five dead
A light motor vehicle and a petrol tanker collided after which the tanker caught fire on the corners of Klip Rivier Drive and Swartkoppies Road in Ekurhuleni on Wednesday, 2 February 2022, killing five people. The fuel tanker landed on its side after the crash, with both vehicles on fire. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “Five lives perished in the fire, which was responded to by fire fighters from the City of Ekurhuleni assisted by crews from the City of Johannesburg. Scene was received at 22h23 reported by an off duty fire fighter. On arrival, both vehicles were well alight. A specialised foam tanker and water tanker fire engines were used to contain and extinguish the fire. We had about 50 fire fighters both cities together. City of Ekurhuleni had a fleet of six fire engines ie a major pumper, two water tankers, a foam tanker and two medium pumpers. The stations in attendance included Alberton, Thokoza and Zonkizizwe fire stations from the City of Ekurhuleni. City of Johannesburg arrived on scene as well to backup.”
“What seems to be the entire family, all five members inside the light motor vehicle was burned beyond recognition. It is alleged that both the truck driver and assistant sustained critical injuries and were transported to nearby hospital for further medical care. The cause of the crash is undetermined and still under investigation by law enforcement officials”, added Ntladi. Shawn Herbst of Netcare 911 said, “At 22h44 Wednesday Night, Netcare 911 responded to a collision on the corners of Klip Rivier Drive and Swartkoppies Road. Reports indicate that a petrol tanker and car were involved in a collision. Medics arrived on scene to find both vehicles on fire. Once the fire and rescue services had doused the flames, emergency works were able to investigate the scene. Sadly, upon closer inspection, it was found that five occupants from the car had burned beyond recognition and were sadly declared deceased at the scene.
