Cape Town crews respond to a fire at Strandfoam
A fire broke out at the Strandfoam plant in Strand, Cape Town on Thursday, 27 January 2022. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, said that the incident was reported at 17h19. “This was logged as a building fire on the property of Strandfoam off Broadlands Road. Response included a fire engine, water tanker and aerial appliance from Strand Fire Station, fire engines from Somerset West, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Macassar fire stations respectively and water tankers each from Belhar and Kraaifontein fire stations. Operations included containment of the fire to the building and exposure protection. The fire was extinguished at 20h18. No injuries were reported but the entire building was destroyed. Challenges faced included the intense heat and the imminent wall collapse, which forced the fire fighters to break down a section of the wall in order for the heat to escape”, said Carelse.
