Ekurhuleni DEMS crews respond to several incidents, several fatalities including eight children
Over the last weekend in June 2025, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services responded to several incidents including fires at informal settlements, house fires and a structural collapse at a house. The first incident was a shack fire at 2938 Tansy Street in Villa Lisa. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison: Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), reported, “On the evening of 27 June 2025, a devastating fire broke out in a 4-roomed shack in Villa Lisa Ext2, Ekurhuleni, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives, all of whom were children.”
“Ekurhuleni Emergency Services were alerted to the fire at 20h35 and responded promptly. On arrival, they found the shack fully engulfed in flames, with members of the community already attempting to extinguish the fire. The firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the fire upon their arrival. A search, rescue, and recovery operation were then conducted, leading to the discovery of four bodies that had been burnt beyond recognition. All four individuals were declared deceased at the scene by Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) Medical Services paramedics”, said Ntladi.
The cause of the fire remains unknown currently and both DEMS fire safety and SAPS are present at the scene to conduct further investigations.
Incident: House fire with fatality, 386 Mduli Str, Mavimbela Section, 27 June 2025
In the evening of 27 June 2025, a devastating fire broke out in a four-room house in Katlehong Mavimbela Section , Ekurhuleni, resulting in the tragic loss of two children’s lives.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services swiftly responded to the fire at 22h53 and on arrival, they found a house fully engulfed in flames. Fire suppression by firefighters was successful as they brought flames under control and extinguished. A search, rescue and recovery operation were then conducted, leading to the discovery of two bodies that had been burnt beyond recognition. Both individuals were declared deceased at the scene by Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) Medical Services paramedics.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, SAPS present at the scene, conducted further investigations on the matter.
Fire call with fatality, 15 Parnell Road, Mimosa, 28 June 2025
At approximately 00h38am City`s Life -Threatening Call Centre received a distress call and dispatched two fire stations to the fire scene at No 15 Parnell Road Mimosa Park, Germiston. Upon arrival, firefighters found a three-door garage structure used as workshop fully engulfed in flames. Firefighting efforts were immediately initiated, and the fire was successfully brought under control. A search operation commenced after extinguishing the flames, leading to the discovery of a charred body in the room. The body is believed to be that of a 52 years-old male, the occupant of the workshop, Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) medical services paramedics declared the patient deceased at the scene. One car was burned completely, and another car was damaged by heat radiation.
Fire safety officer from DEMS department and SAPS continued with on scene fire investigations.
Building collapse, 23 Van der Walt Road, Dalview, Brakpan, 28 June 2025
Emergency Services in the city of Ekurhuleni received a distress call at 12h53 Saturday afternoon and promptly responded to a reported building collapse in Dalview, Brakpan. Upon arrival, rescue team from Brakpan fire station discovered a 19-year-old teenager trapped under the bricks and mortar rubble, with no signs of life. Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) medical services paramedics declared the patient deceased at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. It is believed that the teenager was working as a contractor tasked with demolishing an outside room when a wall collapsed on him. After declaration, rescuers immediately began rescue operations to recover his lifeless body from the debris.
No other casualties were reported on site, and the incident has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigations.
Fire call with fatality, 49 Thukela Street, Arla Park, Nigel , 29 June 2025
At 03h00 am Sunday morning, City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) firefighters responded to a fire incident at Arla Park Ext 3, Nigel. Upon arrival, four roomed shack house fully engulfed in flames, with the community assisting in extinguishing the blaze. After the flames were put out, firefighters began search and recovery efforts as there were concerns that there may be casualties trapped inside.
Two bodies were discovered in the burnt remains of the shack. The victims were identified as a 22-year-old male and a two-year-old baby, both of whom were burned beyond recognition. An eight-year-old child managed to escape with minor burns and was taken to nearby hospital for medical treatment. The two deceased individuals were pronounced dead at the scene by Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) Medical Services paramedics.
DEMS` fire safety officials and SAPS officers conducted investigation on scene to determine the possible cause of the blaze.
