Fire breaks out at Sonae Arauco plant in Rocky’s Drift Mbombela
The Sonae Arauco (Pty) Ltd production facility at Rocky’s Drift in Mbombela caught fire on Sunday, 24 January 2021. CFO Petrus Mthiyane, chief fire officer at Mbombela Fire and Rescue Service, said, “We responded to the industrial plant fire in Rocky’s Drift at 10h30 on Sunday with a major pumper, a water tanker and a hazmat response unit. Operations included first attack with the roof monitor, unmanned followed by the second attack with ground crew with attack lines and foam. The fire was extinguished at 16h30. Challenges faced included adverse weather due to Tropical storm Eloise. The heavy downpour during operations made it difficult to contain the oil spillage. The cause of the fire was a burst oil tank and the oil was set alight by ignition source. No injuries were reported.”
