Massive fire at wood recycling centre challenges Baltimore fire crews

Baltimore City fire crews battled a massive wind-driven brush fire in Camp Small, located near Brand Street. The fire, which began around 17h15, engulfed a large pile of trees and logs stacked up to 30 feet high, creating significant challenges for firefighters due to its intensity and limited access to the area, WBAL reports. There was only one roadway to access the woodpiles.
The fire started on the evening of Thursday, 5 December 2024 in a large storage area with trees and logs stacked about 30 feet tall at Camp Small along W Cold Spring Lane, according to Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace. It took crews roughly 24 hours to contain the massive fire, preventing damage to surrounding infrastructure.
Once the fire was contained on Friday, it smouldered for nearly four days, before going out on Monday evening, fire officials said.
Over 100 firefighters and 12 engine companies responded to the fire to help.
The fire produced heavy embers that have sparked smaller brush fires in nearby areas. Crews have formed strike teams to quickly address these spot fires. To protect critical infrastructure, such as the light rail tracks, operations included shutting down the tracks and de-energising the catenary lines.
Additionally, firefighters closed portions of I-83 and deployed apparatus to neighbourhoods around the fire to prevent spread. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, as access to the fire’s origin remains unsafe.
