Major fire destroys Jokioinen Leipä bread factory, Finland

A fire destroyed the main bakery of Jokioinen Leipä bread factory in the municipality of Jokioinen in southern Finland early on Sunday morning, 8 February 2026. The blaze broke out shortly after 04h30am at the company’s factory on Leivänkuja. Flames spread through the structure and reached the roof. Rescue services fought the fire through the morning.
The bakery stood empty at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
The Häme Police Department said officers opened a fire investigation on Sunday morning. Investigators said they do not rule out criminal involvement at this stage.
Emergency services issued a public warning during the morning due to heavy smoke. Authorities advised residents to remain indoors and shut down ventilation systems. Thick white smoke spread across the area and reduced visibility on nearby roads.
Jokioinen Leipä operates as a family-owned business founded in 1983. The Jokioinen site served as the firm’s main base since its early years.
Managing director Mikko Virtanen told Ilta-Sanomat that the fire started outside a hall measuring about 2,500 square metres. He said staff managed to extinguish flames on the exterior but the fire had already spread into the walls.
Authorities said the building will be lost. The destroyed hall served as the main production site for bread and baked goods. A smaller bakery building stands next to it. That unit remains intact.
