Five, including doctor, die while cycling in Gauteng

R82 De Deur Crash
Two members of the Lenasia cycling community were tragically killed in an alleged drunk-driving incident on Sunday morning, sending shockwaves through local communities and prompting calls for improved road safety. They were allegedly hit by a vehicle on the R82 (Old Johannesburg Road) near Walkerville.
The victims have been identified as Atish Jivan (52) and Jayesh Madhav (49).
They were reportedly cycling uphill towards Walkerville when the crash occurred.
News of their deaths was later confirmed through a message circulated on a local cycling WhatsApp group.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the collision involved a white VW Polo carrying five occupants. “The two cyclists were declared dead on the scene while the occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries. No arrests have been made, and police investigations are underway,” Nevhuhulwi said.
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief from political organisations and community members. The African Transformation Movement (ATM) expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the loss as devastating.

Reports confirm a total of five cyclists lost their lives over the weekend, including a cyclist identified as David Sejobe, who was struck while cycling to work.
Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide following the fatal collisions, with reports suggesting reckless driving in at least one instance.
