Major fire breaks out at Tehran shopping centre
A massive fire tore through the Jannat Bazaar in western Tehran on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, causing significant property damage but resulting in no reported casualties. The fire erupted at approximately 09:55am local time in the Jannat Abad neighbourhood. The fire originated in a 2 000-square-metre market hall or shed largely constructed of flammable materials, which allowed the flames to spread rapidly through the densely packed area. Thick plumes of black smoke were visible from various parts of the capital, blanketing nearby residential and commercial districts.
Firefighters from five different stations were dispatched immediately to the scene to contain the blaze. Crews tackled the fire from several directions to prevent it from reaching neighbouring buildings and a nearby busy road. Jalal Maleki, spokesperson for the Tehran Fire Department, confirmed by mid-day that the fire had been brought under control.
Following containment, crews transitioned to smoke removal and spot-check operations to ensure no remaining hotspots could reignite.
Mohammad Behnia, operations commander of Tehran Emergency Services, reported that the market was successfully evacuated, resulting in no injuries or fatalities.
Initial assessments indicate that around 200 stalls and kiosks were destroyed in the fire. While the cause remains under official investigation, authorities have noted that the market's high density and the presence of flammable materials contributed to the intensity of the blaze.
Officials have not yet confirmed if the incident was accidental or linked to other ongoing events in the country.
