Tshwane Executive Mayor welcomes 76 newly trained firefighters
On 13 September 2024, the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department (ESD) held a firefighter passing-out parade and honoured some of its members who have recently retired. “This morning, I had the honour of welcoming 76 new firefighters to the Emergency Services Department (ESD) at the passing out parade event held at Lucas van den Berg Sport Field in Pretoria West. The ceremony also served to recognise eight retired ESD personnel members who have made valuable contributions to the City for up to 42 years”, said Ald Cilliers Brink, Executive Mayor of Tshwane.
The 76 new recruits underwent training, which included both theory and physical training. The new recruits are former emergency medical care practitioners, who are now absorbed into the Fire and Rescue Operations Division following the cessation of the city's ambulance services. Back in May 2022, the Gauteng Provincial Government took over the emergency medical and ambulance service function, meaning that these services are no longer provided by the City.
The former emergency medical care practitioners are now a welcome addition to the firefighter’s team. They will strengthen our fire and rescue operations and improve service delivery by responding rapidly to incidents where the community needs assistance.
The pass out parade also honoured eight recently retired firefighters who have dedicated many years of service and played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. I would like to congratulate them for their unwavering commitment and dedication over the course of their careers and wish them well in their retirement.
The pass out parade was well supported by the MMC for Community Safety, Ald Grandi Theunissen, the City Manager, Mr Johann Mettler, the Chief of Emergency Services, Chief Moshema Mosia, as well as local, provincial and national government departments and other stakeholders.
Our administration recognises and appreciates the critical role that the men and women in uniform from various disciplines play in keeping our communities safe, be it through crime fighting, responding to emergencies, assisting the ill or putting out fires.
