City of Tshwane firefighters respond to a mass-casualty bus accident in Annlin West, Pretoria

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department responded to a bus accident at the intersection of Lavender Road and Sefako Makgatho Drive in Annlin West, near Wonderboom in Pretoria North on the afternoon of Sunday, 2 February 2025. Lindsay Mnguni, acting public information and media liaison officer for the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “The bus accident was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) at about 17h21. The ECC immediately dispatched firefighting resources from Wonderboom Fire Station and Central Fire Station to the scene.”
“These included a fire engine, a rapid intervention unit, a mobile command unit, a district commander’s unit and a video unit,” said Mnguni.
He added, “A total of 81 patients were treated on the scene by several emergency medical care practitioners and the firefighters. Various emergency medical services treated and transported 77 patients of whom only two had suffered critical injuries. The rest had suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe and all were transported to different hospitals in and around the city, including Tshwane District Hospital, Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Pretoria West District Hospital.”
“The other 17 patients who had experienced only minor injuries declined to be transported to hospital.”
“The Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Province Emergency Medical Services, the South African Police Service and other role players were on the scene and assisted with incident management. The Tshwane Emergency Services Department would like to encourage motorists (and other road users) to be cautious when driving or travelling on our roads to prevent similar incidents from occurring. “
The road was closed for a brief period during the rescue operations and while the bus was being recovered.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
