At least five dead and six missing in explosion at chemical plant, Gaomi, China
An explosion at a chemical plant in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong killed five people, injuring 19 with six people still missing. The blast occurred a few minutes before noon on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, shaking part of a chemical plant operated by Shandong Youdao Chemical in the city of Weifang and caused significant damage to nearby buildings as can be seen in the video of the explosion.
More than 200 emergency workers responded to the blast, according to a statement issued by China's emergency response authority on Tuesday afternoon. Provincial and local authorities have set up a joint rescue command centre to respond to the incident which is running a rescue operation to find the missing people.
Shandong Youdao Chemical develops, produces and sells technology for pesticides, pharmaceuticals and related fine chemical intermediates.
The Weifang Ecological Environment Bureau dispatched staff to test the site of the blast but said there were no results yet available. The bureau advised nearby residents to wear face masks in the meantime, Beijing News reported.
The blast was powerful enough to knock out the windows at a storage warehouse more than two miles (three kilometres) away from the factory, according to a video shared by a local resident, who declined to give his name out of concern for retaliation.
