Fire stations of the world: South Metro Fire Rescue Station 32 in Centennial, Colorado, US
South Metro Fire Rescue’s Station 32 is located at 5945 S Quebec Street at Orchard Road in Centennial, Colorado in the US. The station went into service on 28 November 2018 and the grand opening ceremony was on 2 March 2019. The $7,5 million facility has 12 bedrooms, separate bathrooms as well as a fitness centre and training room. However, not everything at the station is new. "A lot of thought has gone into what the fire fighters can preserve to help tell the story and carry it through the generations," said Eric Hurst, a public information officer for South Metro Fire Rescue.
One of those items is a mural in the kitchen area. A mural on a wall at South Metro Fire Station 32 will be preserved even though the old station was torn down. "It was actually hand-painted by a fire fighter with the Castlewood Fire Department, that's a name that came before South Metro," said Hurst. "It's so important, in fact, that we've talked to the construction company and they're going to do their best to take that piece of wall away from the building before demolition begins and install it in the new building once it goes up." OZ architecture designed a new fire station to meet the current and future needs of the fire department and the quickly growing community with goals to improve site circulation and crew response. Due to the restricted site size, the design solution called for a two-storey building with partial basement, reducing the footprint while providing the needed fire fighter living quarters. The design also allowed the building to be placed within the required setbacks while providing ample site circulation, open space and landscaping. The aesthetic goal was to achieve a civic and traditional structure, which visually relates to the recently constructed Station No 31, also designed by OZ Architecture. Due to the proximity of these two stations, creating a visually related station design was the start to achieving a district identity.
