Major fire incident at Crewe in Cheshire, 12-year-old arrested for arson, UK

Firefighters battled a huge fire at a disused print works building in Crewe town centre for more than 21 hours as emergency fought to avoid a major crisis. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to Catherine Street shortly before 16h30 BST on Friday, 9 August 2024. “Seven fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and our high reach extending turret scorpion are tackling a large fire involving a disused building on Catherine Street in Crewe.”
“The incident involved a large building (measuring approximately 70m x 90m) that is well alight. In attendance were the aerial ladder platform and scorpion tackling the fire from above. Two fire engines from Crewe, one fire engine from Nantwich, one fire engine from Audlem, one fire engine from Winsford, one fire engine from Northwich, High Reach Extending Turret (HRET) Scorpion from Macclesfield, one fire engine from Lymm, one fire engine from Congleton, the aerial ladder platform from Lymm, one fire engine from Chester, one fire engine from Sandbach, the high volume pump from Powey Lane, the command unit from Northwich Fire Station and two fire engines from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and one from West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service.”
Residents were evacuated from their homes and had to stay the night in Crewe Lifestyle Centre as fire engines from across Cheshire as well as from Staffordshire and West Midlands, battled to get the fire under control with a total of 15 fire engines from across the county and other specialist appliances on scene.
The fire service said it was working to dampen the flames as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of the fire spreading to nearby buildings.
Crewe and Nantwich MP Connor Naismith described it as a "major incident". He said the fire was at the former Communisis building and added that Crewe Lifestyle Centre had been opened for people who have been evacuated.
The council is continuing to provide support to residents who have been evacuated from their homes, by providing temporary accommodation and support at the Crewe Lifestyle Centre, working with Everybody Health and Recreation and the British Red Cross to ensure that people’s wellbeing is supported.
As the fire was finally extinguished on Saturday, 10 August 2024, Cheshire Police confirmed they had arrested a 12-year-old boy on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
