Yachts burn in massive fire at Alabama Marina, US
Crews from the Killen Fire and Rescue Department on Sunday, 4 August 2024, responded to a massive yacht fire at Turtle Point Country Club Marina situated in Killen, Alabama in the US. The Killen Fire and Rescue Department said responders were dispatched for a 65-foot yacht on fire inside the marina at approximately 07h00am. Engine 8 arrived on the scene to find two 60-foot yachts engulfed in flames with the fire advancing towards other vessels. Killen Fire and Rescue Department said that 11 other fire departments assisted in this incident.
Killen Fire and Rescue said the crews stretched two 500-foot attack lines to the marina and began extinguishing the fire. Firefighters removed the main boat on fire to prevent other boats from being exposed.
Killen Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Wesley Tidwell said several individuals were sleeping on nearby boats. They were evacuated safely by fire crews.
The main yacht was secured to a secondary pier and floating booms were deployed around it to contain any hazardous runoff. Crews used 15 gallons of foam to fully extinguish the rest of the fire on the main yacht.
The yacht was then moved from the pier and secured to a barge near Locke Six Boat Ramp. The secondary yacht fire was also controlled.
Eleven fire departments assisted Killen Fire and Rescue with extinguishing the fire:
Killen Fire and Rescue says the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
