Cape Town fire fighter injured after wall collapse during factory fire
A City of Cape Town fire fighter was hospitalised after a wall collapsed during the containment of a fire in Parow on Saturday, 2 January 2021. “The City’s Fire and Rescue Service received an emergency call at 16h55 of a factory alight in Connaught Road, Cravenby, on Saturday, 2 January 2021. The first arriving resource was Goodwood with station commander, Morné Haskell, in charge. He immediately assessed the situation and called upon additional resources. Responding stations included Goodwood, Bellville, Brackenfell, Brooklyn, Belhar, Kuilsriver, each with a fire engine and crew while Roeland Street responded with an aerial appliance. 32 staff members were on scene. The strong winds caused the fire to spread to two adjacent factories, Turbo Exchange and HWT Tyre Fitment Centre and these sustained slight damages. The factories that was mostly affected by the fire was Kleen Eezy and Fix n Smash,” said Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service. “A building inspector was requested as a wall had collapsed as a result of the intense heat generated by the fire load, injuring a fire fighter that had to be hospitalised. The staff member was discharged from hospital later that day and is recuperating at home,” Carelse added. The fire had to be contained quickly as this could have resulted in more factories being affected. The fire was extinguished at 21h14 but an inspection of the premises was conducted the following morning to see if there were any flare ups.
