Ekurhuleni DEMS partakes in 24-hour rescue exercise
The Ekurhuleni DEMS recently conducted a 24-hour rescue exercise as part of its skills development plan. he exercise was held at the Leon Ferreira Fire Station in Boksburg, where fire fighter students received training to hone their abilities in preparing for emergencies and disasters. According to the district manager of fire and rescue training for the city, Gerald Moswathupa, 18 students attended the training.
“We provided the following modules to name a few: vehicle extrication, structural collapse rescue and confined space rescue. One of the exercises involved simulating an earthquake, which resulted in 11 people going missing and the students must recuse the people. The students will be part of Urban Search and Rescue South Africa after they complete the training. This team consists of rescue technicians who can be sent anywhere in the world to help,” Moswathupa said. The district manager confirmed all students completed the drill and are moving on to a new course, which is trench collapse rescue. Moswathupa highlighted that he is pleased with the fire fighters’ performance and is looking forward to completing the course with them. “I’d also like to thank Hilti as a company for providing us with the necessary equipment needed for the exercise,” he said.
