Five fatalities in Du Toitskloof Pass crashes, Paarl
Five people lost their lives in two separate crashes on the Du Toitskloof Pass near Paarl over the weekend, with police confirming that investigations into both incidents are underway. Paarl police registered a culpable homicide case following a crash involving a truck on Sunday, 3 May 2026, at about 41605pm, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg.
Emergency services responded to the scene of a fatal truck crash down the R101 Du Toitskloof Pass. The truck went down the cliff and great team efforts on scene with a four-hour extrication of three patients with moderate to critical injuries and sadly two fatality wounded.
“Two unknown adult males were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the injured victims were transported to a medical facility for treatment,” said Sergeant Twigg.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
In a separate incident on Saturday, May 2, at about 15:45pm, three adults were killed in a single-vehicle crash on the same pass. Sergeant Twigg said police responded to the scene and found three victims who were declared dead on site. The driver and another passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. “The circumstances surrounding this fatal accident are under investigation, and no arrests have been made,” he added.
Following the Sunday crash, the Drakenstein Municipality confirmed that the Du Toitskloof Pass (R101) was closed in both directions overnight to allow for recovery operations.
