Devastating New Year’s Day fire at Le Constellation, Crans-Montana, Switzerland

In the early hours of 1 January 2026, a deadly fire ignited inside Le Constellation, a popular bar and nightclub in the Swiss Alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana in the canton of Valais. The materials ignited, creating a rapid flame spread and a phenomenon described by fire experts as a flashover, a sudden transition to widespread fire involving all combustible surfaces.
Eyewitness accounts and media reports describe scenes where patrons initially saw flames near the ceiling that spread within seconds across the room, trapping people in the basement and prompting desperate attempts to escape through narrow exits and windows.
Swiss prosecutors have stated there is no indication of terrorism or deliberate attack; initial indications point to an accident, although negligence is under scrutiny.
