Ekurhuleni crews respond to large grass fire at substation
City of Ekurhuleni fire crews responded to a large grass fire at a substation in Isando, Ekurhuleni on Sunday, 4 July 2021. Eric Maloka, manager: PIER Northern Region, Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said that the call was received around 13h00 as a possible chemical factory fire explosion on the R24 direction Johannesburg between OR Tambo International Airport and Barbara Road. “Upon arrival, they reported a huge grass fire around an electrical substation. Kempton Park Fire Station responded with a major pump and hydraulic platform and a team of seven fire fighters and an operational shift manager.”
Maloka added, “The grass fire was burning around the corner of Industria and Joisy Road in Isando. The Kempton Park Fire Station crews robustly, defensively and offensively attacked the fire within the electrical sub-station. The fire was contained at 14h30.”
No injuries were reported during and after operation. No damages encountered and the electrical sub-station was not affected.
Challenges faced included lack of grass maintenance around the substation ie there were no(No fire breaks).
: Accessibility towards the sub-station was a challenge for our fire engines.
: The stand was full of rubble.
: The smoke affected the nearby factories and motorists.
