The Nelson Mandela University Higher Certificate in Veldfire Management (HCVM) course, a municipal chief fire officer’s perspective

“I always felt convinced that fire can never be separated from the environment. Having completed the HCVM course I can say in all sincerity, each fire officer who works inside a fire-prone biome should enrol in this course. The wealth of knowledge one attains through the course is invaluable in managing your community wildland fire risks, their safety and their interests in the fire biome they reside or work in. In short, the course is indispensable armour for broadening and advancing your career in fire management. One learns inter alia, how the weather, topography and vegetation interact to influence fire behaviour, how a correct fire regime can protect the environment and community, how to manage wildland fire risks via manipulation of the environment to achieve desired outcomes for both community and environment and how to integrate your risk with stakeholders and role players across multiple disciplines”, said CFO Louis Mostert, Amahlathi Local Municipality.

He added, “Through the strategic management of your fire biome, one becomes central to town planning, disaster management, local economic development and sustainable natural resources management sectors.  Crucially one is empowered with a fundamental understanding of the law and its applications in the multi-sector fields your input and or action as a chief fire officer, is mandated on eg municipalities, forestry, fire protection associations, ecology and nature conservation (and indirectly tourism), agriculture and law enforcement circles.”

“As each year passes, more experience and expertise is attained, a wider professional network is established and a wider network with the country’s academic institutions is nurtured, thereby enabling you to develop policies and plans for a safer community with sustainable natural resources management at the core and maximum value for money to the community we are privileged to serve”, said CFO Mostert.
